Hey! I’m Josh, I Started This Site to help Expats, Diplomats, and their families navigate transitions, build an engaged community, and help us all thrive.

Hello there! I’m Josh, the curious mind behind The Expat Essentials. While I may not be able to boast about a lifetime of expat wisdom, I’m on an exciting journey of discovery and learning, and I invite you to join me – and to share your stories.

My passport country is the United States of America, and we began expatriate living in 2022. My wife is a dedicated diplomat, which is what brought us abroad, along with our spirited elementary-aged daughter.

My career has been a dynamic blend of education and entrepreneurship, two realms that continue to shape my perspectives on this remarkable expat adventure. Before leaving the US, I had a growing business in the education space. But, it was challenging thinking about managing 15 employees from the other side of the globe, not to mention all of the red tape required to do so. I walked away and the company was forced to dissolve. Sad, but a fact many of us have experienced.

Abroad, I find myself in the role of supporting spouse, full-time father, and homemaker. A role I sincerely love, but which also has its challenges and sacrifices. After 18 months, I needed an outlet for my creativity and a place to organize all of the lessons I had learned. I decided to build The Expat Essentials.

In this space, I wear the hats of both learner and sharer, as I dive into the intricacies of expat life, discovering the nuances of diverse cultures, navigating the globe, and unraveling the complexities that come with raising a global citizen.

I believe in the power of shared stories and collective wisdom. I am not the all-knowing guide. Instead, think of me as your fellow explorer, someone who loves to read, research, and engage in conversations with the incredible individuals who make up our expat communities.
