It’s that time of year again! The start of many exciting journeys abroad, with FAST officers and seasoned adventurers alike embarking on new chapters. If you’re anything like I was, the pre-departure period is a whirlwind of packing, planning, and a healthy dose of “What did I forget?!” I remember the scramble, trying to decipher what essentials my family and I would actually need for our new life abroad. After a few bumps in the road (and maybe a forgotten adapter or two!), I’m sharing my personal list of must-have items that made our transition smoother and more enjoyable—plus a few things I wish I’d known before we left.

Think of this as your Expat Essentials cheat sheet, packed with handy products that helped me navigate everything from wonky electrical outlets to staying connected with loved ones back home. These aren’t just things to buy before you go; they’re items that will continue to be valuable throughout your entire assignment.

Staying Connected:

• Unlocked Phone with International Plan/eSIM: Don’t get stuck without communication! An unlocked phone allows you to easily switch to a local SIM card or use an eSIM for affordable data. Research international plans or eSIM options before you leave so you’re connected from day one.
  
  • We made the switch from Verizon to Google Fi and we couldn’t be happier. You do have to enroll for their Unlimited Plus membership to get all of the advantages you’ll need while abroad – but it was still 1/2 the price of Verizon or AT&T. • Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot: Great for areas with unreliable Wi-Fi or when you need secure internet access. We didn’t have to go this route, but depending on where you are headed it might be worth it.
• VPN Subscription: Protect your privacy and access your favorite streaming services from back home with a reliable VPN.
  
  • After a lot of research, we decided to go with NordVPN. It was easy to integrate into our router, so that all WIFI activity was like it was coming from the United States. It made banking, streaming, and overall life much easier. Power & Electronics:

• Universal Travel Adapter: A must-have! Make sure it handles various plug types and voltage conversions. Consider getting a couple, especially if you have multiple devices. We’ve tried a few, but landed on this one for it’s versatility.
• Portable Power Bank: Essential for long travel days or when you’re out exploring and don’t have access to an outlet. Lithium batteries can be complicated while traveling, but our family likes the SABNI Portable Charger for its versatility and multiple plug options.
• Multi-Device Charging Station: Keep all your devices charged in one place, especially helpful in temporary housing with limited outlets. What your family needs might vary, but we like this 5 in 1 Charging Station. It’s fairly small, but has enough space for our needs. This Zobirez 10-Port Charging Station is a great option for more connected families.

Health & Wellness:

• First-Aid Kit (Customized): Pack a comprehensive kit with any prescription medications you need, as well as over-the-counter essentials like pain relievers, allergy medication, and any country-specific remedies.
• Travel-Sized Toiletries: Start with travel sizes to save space, then replenish with local products once you arrive.
• Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste.
• Sunscreen & Insect Repellent: Essential, especially depending on your destination.

Comfort & Convenience:

• Travel Pillow: A good travel pillow can make a world of difference on long flights and can also be used in your temporary housing. Don’t skimp on this one. I like this Memory Foam Travel Pillow. It wraps around my neck and crumples down into a small drawstring bag, so I don’t have to carry it or look like a tourist.
• Eye Mask & Earplugs: Helpful for sleeping in unfamiliar environments or blocking out noise and light.
• Lightweight, Packable Day Bag: Perfect for day trips and exploring your new city. The 4Monster Hiking Daypack is a great option. It folds up small and can easily be packed in your carry-on baggage. We also love its bright colors, it makes it easy to find when we need it.
• Comfortable Walking Shoes: You’ll likely be doing a lot of walking! Invest in a good pair of shoes that are broken in before you go. No real recommendations here, it is a personal choice.

For the Family (If Applicable):

• Favorite Toys/Books: Bring a few familiar comfort items for children to ease the transition.
• Photos of Family & Friends: Displaying photos can help kids feel connected to loved ones back home.
• Educational Resources: If you have school-aged children, consider bringing some learning materials or subscribing to online educational platforms.

Kitchen Essentials

• Travel Spice Kit: Familiar spices can make a world of difference when cooking in a new kitchen. Consider a compact travel spice kit with your favorites or pack small, reusable containers with spices from home. We’ve bought these 4 in 1 Spice Containers just to get us through until our big shipment arrives or until we can buy local spices.
• Portable Blender/Food Processor: A small, portable blender or food processor can be incredibly versatile for smoothies, sauces, and even chopping vegetables.
• Reusable Shopping Bags: Reduce plastic waste and stay organized with sturdy, reusable shopping bags.
• Collapsible Water Filter: If you’re unsure about the water quality at your destination, a collapsible water filter can provide peace of mind and save you money on bottled water. We’ve never had to use one of these, but in case we bought Amazon’s recommended LifeStraw Peak Series – Collapsible Squeeze Bottle Water Filter System
• Multi-Purpose Utensil Set: A compact utensil set with tools like a can opener, bottle opener, and peeler can be surprisingly handy in a temporary kitchen.

Documents & Important Papers

• Passport & Visas: Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and that you have all necessary visas.
• Copies of Important Documents: Make digital and physical copies of your passport, driver’s license, birth certificates, marriage certificate, and other important documents. Store them separately for safekeeping.
• Medical Records: Bring copies of your medical and dental records, including vaccination history and any prescriptions.
• Insurance Information: Have your health insurance, travel insurance, and any other relevant insurance information readily accessible.
• Financial Documents: Bring copies of bank statements, credit card information, and any other financial documents you may need.

Language Learning Tools

• Pocket Translator Device: A pocket translator device can be a lifesaver for communicating in real-time, especially in situations where you need to understand or convey specific information.
• Phrasebook & Dictionary: A compact phrasebook and dictionary can be helpful for navigating everyday situations and learning basic phrases.
• Language Learning App: Download a language learning app like Duolingo or Babbel to start learning the basics before you go and continue your learning journey abroad.
